How to Buy an Electric Boat: A Buyer's Guide
How to buy an electric boat under 8.5 m: drivetrains, usable battery capacity, honest range figures, charging, licences and the questions to ask.
Working out how to buy an electric boat is mostly a matter of asking the right questions in the right order. Boats under 8.5 m — day boats, tenders, runabouts, small catamarans and sport boats — are the most approachable way into electric propulsion, but the spec sheets can mislead if you read them the way you would read a petrol boat's. This guide walks through what actually matters.
Begin with the water, not the boat
Where will the boat live, and what will a typical outing look like? A quiet afternoon on a lake with four people aboard asks very little of a battery. Regular runs along a coastline ask considerably more. Be honest about the ordinary trip rather than the occasional ambitious one — electric boats reward buyers who size for what they actually do.
Outboard or inboard?
Small electric boats come with two broad drivetrain layouts. An electric outboard hangs on the transom like its petrol counterpart: it can be swapped, upgraded or taken to a workshop, and servicing does not require access to the hull's interior. An inboard system is built into the boat — often quieter and better protected, but you are committed to that installation for the life of the boat, and repairs go wherever the builder or their service partner says they go. Neither is wrong. Just know which one you are buying and who will look after it.
Usable kWh beats peak kW
Battery packs in this class span an enormous range — from around 1 kWh in the smallest tenders to tens of kWh in larger sport boats — and the battery figure matters more than the motor's. A motor's peak kW tells you how fast the boat can go and how quickly it drains the pack; it says nothing about how far you will travel. The number to pin down is the usable capacity in kWh — the energy the battery management system actually lets you draw, which is less than the headline figure on some packs. If a builder quotes only a nominal capacity, ask what is usable.
The honest trade: range at displacement speed
Nearly every range figure worth trusting is quoted at displacement speed — the gentle pace at which a hull pushes through the water rather than climbing on top of it. At that speed a modest pack can carry you a long way. Open the throttle towards the top-speed figure and consumption climbs steeply, so the same battery may cover only a small fraction of the advertised distance. A range claim without a speed attached is not a claim at all. Ask what speed it was measured at, and compare boats at the same cruising speed, not at their best-case numbers.
Charging: a socket overnight, or shore power
One genuine advantage of small packs is that many charge from an ordinary household socket overnight — no installation, no marina infrastructure. Larger packs, or owners who want faster turnarounds, will lean on shore power at the berth. Before buying, confirm what connection the boat needs, how long a full charge takes on the supply you actually have, and whether your intended mooring offers it. Charging provision varies from marina to marina, so check the specific one, not the general idea.
Licences: check locally
In many European countries a small, low-powered boat can be driven without any licence at all — but the thresholds and rules differ by country, and often by the specific water you are on. Inland lakes, rivers and coastal waters can each have their own regime. Do not rely on a rule you heard about elsewhere: check with the authority responsible for the waters where you will actually use the boat.
Trailering and storage
Most boats in this class are trailerable, which changes the economics: home storage instead of a year-round berth, and the freedom to try different waters. Check the boat's weight with the battery installed against what your car and licence allow you to tow, and think about winter — where the boat will sit, and what the builder recommends for the pack during long idle periods.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What is the usable battery capacity in kWh?
- What range does the builder quote, and at what cruising speed?
- What warranty covers the battery pack specifically, and for how long?
- Who services the motor, and where is the nearest service point to you?
- What does a full charge require — a household socket, or a dedicated supply?
If a seller cannot answer one of these, treat the gap as information.
